A new Vice President and Dean of Students will be chosen from four candidates by mid-December, according to Laurie Burton-Graham, Goucher’s Executive Vice President and General Counsel, and Co-Chair of the search committee. The selected applicant is expected to join the Goucher community at the end of January or early February.
“This is a very quick timeline,” Burton-Graham said, “especially for a position at this level.”
The four finalists were chosen from a pool of over 150 online applications, all of which were reviewed by Burton-Graham and Becky Kurdle, former Chair of the Board of Trustees and Co-Chair of the committee.
From those 150 applications, ten were selected for phone interviews. Four applicants were then invited to campus.
Both students and faculty and staff were invited to attend separate open sessions with each finalist and were asked to fill out evaluation forms. The results will be compiled by Burton-Graham and Kurdle and presented to the committee before a final decision is made.
In addition to Burton-Graham and Kurdle, the search committee consists of Alexander Crockett ’14, the student representative, Community Living Coordinator and alumna Mary Wahl, Athletic Director Geoff Miller, Associate Director for Leadership Development Stacey Cooper Patterson, and faculty members Seble Dawit and Thomas Kelliher. Crockett failed to comment.
Additionally, President Ungar has the chance to sit-down with each applicant for an hour during his or her visit. The President ultimately has the final say in the selection of the position.
About the four individuals who attended the open sessions, Burton-Graham noted, “One thing I would say about the pool was I was really surprised, very pleasantly by the qualifications of these people. The four who have come are really experienced.”
According to the job description posted by the college, the Vice President and Dean of Students reports directly to the president and “oversees the departments of student engagement, community living, student health and counseling, athletics, career development, multicultural affairs, and the chaplaincy.”
The position is being vacated by Gail Edmonds, who began her service at Goucher in January of 1998 as Associate Dean. She was promoted to Vice President and Dean of Students in 2001.
