Despite Virginia Intermont winning the exhibition, the Gophers battled closely with the other five teams until the end. In the Open division, Karli Postel ’13 received first place in fences, while Addie Jabin ’13 placed fourth on the flat.
The team racked up additional points in the Intermediate division where Freshman Ashley Bent placed second in fences and the sole male on the team, Joey Fink ’15, took third on the flat.
Bent said that this competition was an opportunity to take their horses off campus and get used to competing in another location in preparation for Regionals, which the Gophers clinched a spot in two weeks ago.
Their wins in two regular season shows during the weekend of Feb. 15th at the University of Mary Washington helped the Gophers secure the title of IHSA Zone 4 region I Champions for the 2012-2013 competition year.
The next step is to compete at the Zone 4 finals at St. Andrews University in Laurinburg, NC against three other teams on April 6th. Seniors Karli Postel and Addie Jabin, as well as sophomores Joey Fink and Laura Malone will be the four individuals representing Goucher in the competition. If they place in one of the top two spots in this show at St. Andrews, then they will qualify for Nationals once again.
